Crannogs of Tiree

Object Type:

Summary

There are four probable crannogs on Tiree. They are fewer and smaller than those of Coll. There has been little work done on them. They may have been occupied from late prehistory into the medieval period. An Iron Age quern stone has been recovered from near Eilean Aird nam Brathan, Loch Bhasapol. Ones that are relatively easy to access, at least to the neighbouring shore, are marked*. It is not advised to enter the water without specialised equipment and training:

Loch na Buaile, Scarinish * This can be reached via a small causeway
Loch an Eilein, Heylipol
Eilean Aird nam Brathan, Loch Bhasapol
Eilean Mhic Conuill, Loch Bhasapol

There are two possible crannog sites:
Loch Riaghain, Gott *
Loch na Gile, Balephetrish *
