Summary
Ben Hynish Service Reservoir Access Track
Desk-based assessment and walkover survey
Steven Birch – West Coast Archaeological Services
NL 97041 40826 to NL 96953 40594 An archaeological desk-
based assessment and walkover survey was carried out, from 15
August to 9 September 2021, in advance of the construction of
a new access track for the Ben Hynish Service Reservoir, on the
island of Tiree. The work was undertaken to assess the nature and
extent of any archaeological sites likely to be affected within the
areas outlined for the proposed access track in order to inform
recommendations for the protection and management of any sites
recovered.
The desk-based assessment and investigation of aerial imagery
identified a number of archaeological sites in close proximity to the
proposed works, while the walkover survey confirmed the presence
of these sites and identified one new site. The sites included stone
dykes, field clearance cairns, the stone foundations of a possible
structure, and a number of features most likely associated with
the construction of the service reservoir. The structures date
to the post-medieval period and relate to settlement on the NE
slopes of Ben Hynish and the construction of the service reservoir.
Mitigation measures have been proposed to safeguard the sites
during the development works.
