Holleyman collection: inventory
Inventory of the George Holleyman collection held at An Iodhlann 2013
Printed list of numbered items in the George Holleyman collection of artefacts, photographs, manuscripts and notebooks, held at An Iodhlann. Copy included at the start of the G Holleyman collection file folder. George Holleyman FSA was an archaeologist who was stationed at RAF Tiree during WWII. He carried out significant amounts of pioneering archaeological work in Sussex during the first half of the 20th century, along with Drs. Eliot and Cecil Curwen. He was made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1949. -
Bronze rivet
art of a Medieval bronze rivet, possibly for boat building, from a collection of around 200 bronze objects found by amateur archaeologist George Holleyman FSA at Balevullin in 1941-43, when he served at RAF Tiree during WWII. Identified by Dr Colleen Batey, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Glasgow University and David Caldwell, retired Keeper of Medieval Department at the National Museum of Scotland during a visit to An Iodhlann on 29th April 2016. -
Brass ingot

Identified by Dr Colleen Batey, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at Glasgow University and David Caldwell, retired Keeper of Medieval Department at the National Museum of Scotland during a visit to An Iodhlann on 29th April 2016. -

Reviewed by Dr Euan MacKie in summer 2000 (see 2000.167). Items further identified by Dr Ewan Campbell, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology in Glasgow, in July 2018: Norse ‘platter; early medieval; 16th-18th century. -

Grass-tempered pottery
Fragment of grass-tempered pottery, possibly Norse, from a collection of artefacts found by George Holleyman at Balevullin in 1941-43. Note the grass markings and the voids in the pottery produced by mixing animal dung with clay. Identified by Dr Colleen Batey 21/10/2016 -
